A home filled with the warmth of traditional Canarian houses

The living space begins just beyond the green front door. The open kitchen flows naturally into the sitting and dining areas, while wood, natural stone and daylight connect the rooms. High ceilings, substantial timber door frames and handcrafted details create the warm, time-honoured atmosphere that makes historic houses in Santa Cruz's old quarters so special.

The layout is clear and pleasant: beyond the kitchen, dining area and sitting room are two bedrooms. The modern bathroom and the internal staircase to the roof terrace sit alongside the main living space. Every metre is put to good use, creating a home that works equally well for everyday life and longer stays on La Palma.

The kitchen is the heart of the home

This is where people arrive, gather and happily stay a little longer. The substantial suar-wood bar follows the natural shape of the tree trunk and, together with the bar stools, forms the kitchen's natural meeting point. Friends can sit at the bar while food is prepared; in the morning it is just right for the first café solo, and in the evening for a glass of wine.

A small seating nook by the window completes this lively centre of the home. It is a lovely place to read, enjoy a quiet breakfast or simply look out into the Barrio. The artfully crafted floor of natural stone and river pebbles visually frames the kitchen and makes it truly one of a kind.

Canarian tea wood, mulberry wood and handcrafted pieces

Floors and ceilings made from Canarian tea wood give the rooms depth and warmth. Mulberry wood appears elsewhere in the house. Bespoke furniture, substantial timber frames and a richly carved door add a highly personal signature.

Tea, mulberry and suar each display very different grains and shades. Together with natural stone, historic proportions and high ceilings, they create a warm and welcoming blend of materials that runs throughout the house.

A modern bathroom full of personality

The bathroom is compact, modern and designed with a real delight in materials and colour. The pale travertine countertop basin rests on warm-toned wood; above it, the round mirror framed with small wooden discs echoes the craftsmanship found throughout the house.

In the shower, vivid green bamboo-style surfaces and a slender wooden shower panel add a fresh accent. Beyond a substantial sliding wooden door is a small bathroom composed with care and perfectly matched to the house's individual character.

Clearly arranged and pleasantly manageable

The 59 m² ground floor is arranged clearly and efficiently. The kitchen, dining area and sitting room form the shared living space. Two bedrooms provide room for a couple, guests or a separate home office. The bathroom and staircase to the roof terrace are centrally positioned and easily reached from the living area.

A roof terrace above the Barrio's tiled roofs

The internal staircase leads to a place that gives the house a second dimension of its own. From the roof terrace, the view extends across the old tiled roofs towards the Iglesia de San Francisco de Asís, the former Franciscan monastery housing the Museo Insular de La Palma, the slopes above Santa Cruz and, between the buildings, the Atlantic.

Life can move outdoors here: breakfast in the morning sun, a table for long evenings, herbs and flowering plants in pots, a favourite chair for reading or two loungers for quiet hours above the Barrio. The existing storage/laundry room and utility sink keep everyday necessities close at hand while leaving plenty of terrace space for personal ideas.

Santa Cruz on foot

The house stands on a quiet, lightly trafficked street in the Barrio de San Francisco, also known as La Asomada. Plaza de San Francisco and the Museo Insular de La Palma are only a few steps away. The former sixteenth-century Franciscan monastery, the church and the historic lanes shape the everyday character of the Barrio.

The supermarket, cafés, historic centre, bus stops, beach and seafront promenade are all within easy walking distance. Public parking is available directly in front of the house and nearby. Santa Cruz can therefore be enjoyed very naturally on foot as part of everyday life.

Living in the capital of our Isla Bonita

With its clear layout, this historic townhouse is particularly well suited to one person or a couple. The second bedroom offers flexibility as a guest room, home office, studio or quiet retreat. The furniture remains in the house, allowing a new life here to begin without lengthy preparation.

The property is also appealing as a second home on La Palma or for long-term rental.

The city beach, seafront promenade and harbour are part of everyday life here, with fresh fish available at the harbour each day. Its central yet peaceful position, short distances and characterful design will appeal to those who want to experience Santa Cruz from within, as part of an established Barrio with everything close at hand.

In summary

Traditional materials, an open-plan kitchen and living space, two bedrooms and a roof terrace above the tiled roofs: across its thoughtfully arranged floor plan, this house brings together many of the details that make life in the Barrio de San Francisco so special. A home for people who want to explore Santa Cruz de La Palma on foot and feel part of a long-established neighbourhood.

A townhouse for arriving, gathering and enjoying life - in the historic heart of Santa Cruz de La Palma.

WHAT'S AROUND THE CORNER?
=> Santa Cruz de La Palma

Santa Cruz de La Palma, the small but very charming capital of our Isla Bonita, was founded on 3 May 1493 and has since been declared a cultural asset in its entirety in the category of ‘historical and artistic sites’.

The city centre is located at sea level, but the municipality extends to an altitude of 1,800 metres.

So you can live right in the capital, but also in the countryside – and yet still be ‘IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CITY’!

Tips:

Just stroll around: Calle O'Daly and Calle Real, together with Avenida Marítima, are colonial in style, with beautiful colourful façades, charming little squares and enchanting alleys that are worth strolling through, as well as charming shops, bars and restaurants.

Discover the town hall, Plaza de España and El Salvador Church, undoubtedly the most beautiful Renaissance complex in the Canary Islands. Be sure to visit the interior of the church and its fantastic coffered ceilings!

The Balcones de la Avenida Marítima are probably one of the most famous images of Santa Cruz de La Palma. A group of small houses painted in different colours with beautiful wooden balconies full of flowers.

You must sit down and enjoy a coffee in the Plaza de la Alameda!

P.S. Take the lift to the upper town with its heart and great views: San Telmo!

Los Indianos: Simply the most original carnival in the world! An unmissable event where locals and visitors come together in a gigantic white flood.

Bajada de la Virgen de las Nieves: Every five years in summer, the great folk festival of the patron saint of La Palma takes place in Santa Cruz de La Palma! Don't miss the dance of the dwarves: La danza de los Enanos de La Palma!

Playa de Santa Cruz de La Palma: The capital's city beach, a sprawling sandy beach of volcanic origin, with unique sunrises!

Muelle pesquero: Fishing harbour with its own fish shop selling the best freshly caught fish on the island! Be there at 9 a.m. when the boats return!

Restaurante Chipi-Chipi: Enjoy a rustic Canarian atmosphere and grilled meat in this garden restaurant, artistically inspired by Luis Morera!

Restaurante La Graja: An old house with all its charm. The menu is short and offers just enough to delight guests!
